6th Annual Orchard Lake Campground Chess Tournament

For the first ime in 6 years, the weather during the tournament was miserable; it rained during the entire day.  Fifty-nine players participated and had to focus on chess rather than the competing recreational opportunities.  Seventeen players chose to play in a scholastic section for players rated under 1000, the other 42 players battled 4 rounds until Joshua Suich and John Dusky were on top to claim first place with 3.5 points each.  Karl Ehrsam, Ian Sanders, Taylor Wilhour, and Victor Suich were right behind with 3 points to win class prizes.  Additional class prizes went to David Conard, Kristin Antelman, Colette Wheeless, Laura Lee, David Ward, and Larry Gentry.  

In the scholastic section, Cabot Lineberger won 5 games in 5 rounds and was the sole first place winner.  Phillip Pinell was 2nd with 4 points while class prizes went to Benjamin Jones, Edward Wu, and Alexandra Groesser.

Facilities at Orchard Lake Campground include swimming, boating, fishing, 9-iron par 3 golf, horse shoes, hiking, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and more. Directions to Orchard Lake Campground:  From downtown Saluda, head west past fire station on Greenville St which
becomes Mtn Page Rd.  After 3.5 miles, turn left onto Mine Mountain Rd.  Go 1.5 miles to campground entrance.
