GROUP MISSION STATEMENT
Our Order's motto is Veritas. Truth. Our purpose is to praise, to preach, and to bless. St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers in 1216, and the Holy Spirit has called lay members to the order since that time. We are single or married men and women, who try to preach without words --via the example of our lives. We seek to draw closer to God through the study of His Word and through prayer --and we share the fruits of our contemplation with one another. We express grateful love to God in service and compassion to others. Along with St. Dominic, the great Dominican saints are role models for us: Catherine of Sienna, Martin de Porres, Rose of Lima, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas, Pius V and many others. And we have a special devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, since she taught our father Dominic the way to say it as we do today. Additionally, the Holy Father, Pope John Paul, recently charged our order --during its general chapter of the Friars Provincials-- with the task of coming to the defense of Life: Life in the womb and life threatened by euthanization.
HISTORY OF THE ST. MARTIN DE PORRES GROUP
Our first Temporary Professions, 1999
The St. Martin DePorres Chapter was the first group of Dominican Laity in the Carolinas. We started meeting & began formation in 1998. The Lord blessed us with the leadership of Mrs. Anne Fahrman, OP, who had professed in the Dominican Laity years ago when she lived up north. Later, our sister in Christ Betty Ambrose served as our moderator until she moved away. For a while we were under the spiritual direction of Sr. Michelle Teff --also a blessing to us. During mass for the Feast of Martin (Nov. 3) 2002, six of us made our final profession. Former Provincial Moderator Dru Chauffe, Provincial Promoter of the Laity Fr. Martin Iott, and novice Brother Leo were all able to be on hand to make it a great occasion of fellowship.
